The objective of the `Hilando capacidades´ project is to strengthen the capacities of rural and indigenous women in the Colombian coffee-growing region in the department of Caldas, in order to reduce gender gaps in their communities, improve their living conditions and guarantee their human rights, an essential condition for the consolidation of territorial peace.
The background is based on the experience of the Universidad Autónoma de Manizales with the Colombia Científica – Hilando Capacidades Políticas para las Transiciones en el territorio programme, a process in which the peasant and indigenous women’s organisations involved in this project participated.
The objective of the first phase of the project, developed over 5 years, was to create transitional political capacities in the territories, based on the democratic mediation of social conflicts, aimed at reconciliation and the construction of a stable and lasting peace.
The women, youth, male and female leaders, who participated in the first phase through participatory techniques and methods, established a roadmap that now makes it possible to continue working to overcome the structural barriers identified.
his project focuses specifically on the work and strengthening of two women’s organisations that emerged from the processes previously accompanied in the municipalities of Samaná and Riosucio.
The Organización Campesina Eco-Heliconias is made up of women who live in the `Corregimiento de Encimadas´ in the municipality of Samaná, in the east of Caldas. This organisation works on the commercialisation of products made from biomaterials.
The organisation Asociación de Mujeres del Resguardo Indígena de Origen Colonial Cañamomo Lomaprieta is made up of women from the municipality of Riosucio (Caldas) and seeks greater political and organisational participation, leadership and empowerment.
