JOHAN GALTUNG, THE PICASSO OF THE SOCIAL SCIENCES. IN MEMORIAM

‘Peace is the ability to handle conflicts with empathy, non-violence and creativity’.

Johan Galtung, Norwegian mathematician and sociologist, born in 1930 and died in 2024.

He collaborated with the Peace Research Centre ‘Gernika Gogoratuz’ from where he developed a close relationship with the work for peace carried out in the village. He participated in different editions of the ‘International Conference on Culture and Peace in Gernika’ held in the framework of the commemoration of the bombing of the town, in collaboration with the Kultur Etxea and the Town Council of Gernika-Lumo. His first visit was in 1998, the year in which his work “After the violence, 3Rs: reconstruction, reconciliation and resolution. Confronting the visible and invisible effects of war and violence”. In 2003 he presented in Gernika his work “Peace by peaceful means. Peace and conflict, development and civilisation”.
