THE CONFERENCE ON THE FUTURE OF EUROPE. CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES

vc_row]

Webinar organised by ehuGune and Europagune on 4 May 2021, in which María Oianguren (Director of Gernika Gogoratuz) pointed out, in the context of the citizen consultation of the upcoming Conference on the Future of Europe promoted by the institutions of the Union, that the EU should assume critical leadership and an emancipatory narrative to encourage a process of economic, social and political change.

For his part, Gonzalo Fernández (Coordinator of OMAL/Paz con Dignidad) debunked the myths surrounding the European Recovery funds, recalling that many are loans to be repaid, subject to strong conditionalities, and whose protagonists are not going to be the most affected sectors, but the big companies that are going to allocate this aid to their ecological and digital business. Instead of opting for an emancipatory and transformative narrative, the “nextgenerationUE” funds do not seem likely to contribute to a greener, fairer and more resilient model, and will instead benefit the usual elites.

These debates on the conflicts between capital and life should have a place in the citizens’ reflection on the future of Europe, and the EU institutions should take them into consideration for the future of the European project.
